I am passionate about helping others, and this passion has informed my career choice to become a physician's assistant. When I took my first human anatomy class in high school, I was completely fascinated by the study of the human body. I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in medicine. In college, I took several different anatomy courses as well as genetics and immunology. I love learning about how the sciences relate to each other. I also decided to study towards a second bachelor's degree, in psychology, to gain insight into mental health issues.In March 2014, I traveled to Vere, Jamaica, with a medical team that counseled, treated, and diagnosed patients who had very limited means. The experience was life-changing for me; I plan to make good use of the lessons I learned about caring for patients emotionally, as well as the clinical knowledge I gained. It broadened my perspectives to see how people who were living in poverty were truly wealthy in spirit. I also worked with Volunteers in Medicine, where I taught dental and podiatric maintenance to people at a homeless shelter. I instructed them on how to recognize the signs of hyperglycemia. Working in the emergency department as a scribe has also informed my choice to use my deep knowledge of anatomy, physiology, psychology, and spirituality to serve others.
